There are many reasons to support our local grass fed beef farmers, as outlined in “Cows Save the Planet” by Judith D. Schwartz. She reasons that many of our environmental, social and economic problem today could be solved by treating our soil differently. The enrichment of our soil can be brought about by returning the land to grazing animals, such as the domesticated cow. Grazing animals can restore our land by returning carbon to the soil. The carbon provides “green water”, temperature regulation and soil fertility.
Some of our current problems that would be solved with livestock grazing:
- climate change
- biodiversity loss
- desertification
- droughts
- floods
- wildfires
- rural poverty
- malnutrition
- obesity
